Chimney Brick & Masonry Repair in Oshawa

Brick does not fail on its own. It fails because the mortar joints let water in, or because a bad previous repair used mortar harder than the brick around it. In Ontario the freeze-thaw cycle then does the demolition for free, one winter night at a time.

What we do

Chimney Brick & Masonry Repair in Oshawa — how it works

Our masonry work starts with matching. We match mortar type, colour, texture and joint profile to what is already on the chimney — soft lime-based mixes on century brick downtown, Type N on modern stock. A repair that is visibly different from a distance is a repair done wrong.

Signs you need this service

  • Brick faces flaking, popping or turning to dust (spalling)
  • Mortar joints receded, sandy or scrapeable by hand
  • Missing bricks or an obviously patched section
  • A leaning stack or a visible bulge in one face
  • White chalky efflorescence on the brick
  • Loose brick or debris landing in the gutters

What's included

  • Colour and texture matched mortar
  • Joints ground to proper depth before repointing
  • Salvage and reuse of heritage brick where sound
  • Crown and flashing inspection as part of the job
  • Full debris removal and workmanship warranty

Local knowledge

What this looks like around Oshawa

Downtown Oshawa, McLaughlin and the Whitby village core have soft century brick that must be repointed with a lime-based mortar. Hard Portland mix on soft brick traps moisture in the brick face and accelerates spalling — we regularly rebuild sections that failed for exactly this reason.

Pickering, Bond Head and the Lakeview edge have the deepest moisture damage on our map. Expect the sound-brick line to sit further down than it looks from the ground, and budget accordingly.

FAQs

Questions homeowners ask us

What causes chimney bricks to crumble?

Water entering through failed mortar joints, a cracked crown or a missing cap, then freezing. The expansion pops the fired face off the brick. Once the face is gone the brick absorbs water faster and the process accelerates.

Is repointing enough or do I need a rebuild?

If the brick bodies are sound and only the joints have washed out, repointing is correct and will last decades. If the brick faces themselves are spalled off or the stack is out of plumb, rebuilding from the roofline is the honest answer.

Can you match my existing brick?

In most cases yes — either with salvaged brick or a close modern match, plus mortar tinted and textured to the original. On heritage properties downtown we source salvage rather than using new brick.

When can masonry work be done?

April through October in Ontario. Mortar needs sustained temperatures above freezing to cure to strength. Winter emergencies get temporary weather protection until proper repair weather returns.
